But the thrill soon wears off as he is given 'command' of the squadron, though it is mostly ceremonial. Pappy also brings a new pilot into the squadron whom Gutterman says is considered a jinx. Pappy tells Gutterman to keep it to himself, there's no such thing as jinxes, however the rest of the squadron finds out anyway from other sources.
